Four Bees Combine to Shutout 'Shoes

BURLINGTON, Iowa - Four Burlington pitchers combined to shutout the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes Wednesday night, as the Bees saddled the Horseshoes with their fifth loss of the season.

Garrett Moltzan (1-1) went five full innings for the win. He allowed two hits, walked two and struck out five.  Nick Tampafollowed with two no hit frames. Steve Escarcega and Kyle Maurer each tossed a scoreless inning to complete the blanking. Zachary Ryan (0-2) took the loss.

The Bees opened the scoring in the second. Sam Monroe, who was 3-4 on the night, led off with a single to left. He stole second ahead of a Kevin Santiago RBI single to left.

Burlington added another run in the fifth when Monroe again set the stage with a single, this time to right field. Designated hitter Weston Fulk was hit by a pitch. Santiago walked to load the bases for Chase Honeycutt. The Bees catcher slapped a ground ball back to 'shoes pitcher Evan Long, who threw wild to first allowing Monroe to scamper home with the second run of the game.

The Bees blew it open with three runs on one hit and an error in the sixth. Dawson Estep walked. He advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt that went to the wall behind first. He went to third on a wild pitch. Monroe doubled to left, for his third hit. Estep scored.

Henkle was hit by a pitch to make it first and second. Fulk walked to load the bases one more time. Joey Fitzgerald walked pushing Henkle across.

Burlington closed the scoring with two runs in the seventh inning. Ryan Grace punched a single up the middle and went to second on another Springfield wild pitch. Estep also singled to center, making it first and third. Grace scored on another wild pitch. A Trey Adams sac fly closed the scoring.

The Bees are on the road until June 16 when they return to Community Field to take on the O'Fallon Hoots.
