Clinton LumberKings Walk-Off the Dans in Game One

CLINTON, Iowa - The Clinton LumberKings (9-4) walked-off the Danville Dans (5-7) 5-4 in extra innings at NelsonCorp Field on Wednesday night.

This game marked the first matchup between the Dans and the LumberKings in Clinton since the 1954 Mississippi-Ohio Valley Championship, where the Dans would win the series 3-0. The first two games of the series were played on September 6 and 7. A total of 25,116 days or 68 years, 9 months and 6 days.

The Dans scored in the top of the first with a lead off triple by Juston Vossos put a runner in scoring position early. Brandon Bishop would would hit a sac fly RBI to score Vossos and take a 1-0 lead.

In the top of the second inning on a RBI ground out by Adam Ebling to put the Dans ahead 2-0.

The LumberKings responded with a run of their own on a Gavin Brzozowski RBI double to cut the lead in half 2-1. Both teams would be scoreless through the fourth and fifth innings.

Danville would score in the top of the sixth on a Sammy Leis RBI single to extend the lead 3-1.

Clinton score in both the bottom of the seventh and eighth innings on a throwing error and a RBI single by Brock Wollin to tie the game 3-3.

The Dans and LumberKings would not score in the ninth inning and the game would extend into extra innings.

The Dans second designated hitter, Nate Chester, with two strikes and two outs in the game hit an RBI double to take a 4-3 lead with the ghost runner scoring the go-ahead run.

The LumberKings would record the final out in the top of the tenth and get to work.

Trevor Burkhart would be the LumberKings' ghost runner at second base to start the inning and advance to third on a wild pitch. Max Holy would hit an RBI double to score Burkhart and tie the game 4-4. Wollin would come to the plate with two outs and two strikes in the count with runners at the corners and hit the walk-off RBI single to win the game and defeat the Dans 5-4.

The LumberKings win streak advances to four straight wins, the longest streak of the 2023 season. Clinton will host Danville for the series finale tomorrow and look for their second straight sweep at home.

First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. with the gates at NelsonCorp Field opening at 5:30 p.m.
