Jakubowski Saves The Day Again

Jakubowski Saves The Day Again

Bees closer Jake Jakubowski is just as cool as it gets. A night after picking up his second win of the year in the tenth inning of a suspended game, the righty slinger calmly entered the bottom of the ninth Tuesday with the Bees having let Illinois Valley within a run.  Just like that he struck out both men he faced earning his fourth save.

Burlington was down 2-1 when they came to bat in the home third.  Jaden Hackbarth led it off getting hit by a pitch.  Trent Rice followed with a shot just over the left field fence giving the Bees a 3-2 lead.  It was Rice's first home run of the year.

That was where it stood until the fifth.  Mason Schwalbach walked.  Coy Sarsfield, who had an RBI double in the first, also walked.  Jackson Fisher dropped a bunt on a high and tight fastball, successfully sacrificing the runners to second and third.

Schwalbach scored on a passed ball.  Sarsfield went to third.  Caleb Wulf was hit by a pitch before Cedric Dunnwald drove Sarsfield home with a single to center.

The Shrimp scored runs in the sixth and seventh to get it to 5-4.

Sarsfield opened the bottom of the seventh by reaching on a throwing error from the Shrimp shortstop.  Fisher advanced him to third with a line double to the left center gap.  Wulf plated both runners on a single to left, and the Bees were up 7-4.

They added what proved to be important insurance run in the eighth when Rice walked and raced home on Schwalbach's league leading 18th double.  8-4 Burlington.

Jordan Martinez came in from the pen to get three quick outs.  With no save opportunity, the newly arrived righty from New Mexico came back out for the ninth.  A one out hit by pitch, a single and a three run home run recreated the save situation.  In came Jakubowski.  That was that.  The Bees beat the Pistol Shrimp 8-7.

Burlington hits the road after a day off Wednesday for four on the road.  They return home Tuesday to face first half winners Clinton.  First pitch is 6:30 PM.
