Bees Split With Gems

Bees Split With Gems

The Bees split an unusual double header Monday night at Community Field, as the Quincy Gems came to town to pick up a suspended game from July 7 then play the regularly scheduled game.

With the score tied at four in the top of the tenth on the 7th the rains came.  By rule the contest, when it was suspended, became the first of two when the Gems next visited.  And, that was today.

When Quincy failed to score in their half, Tanner Holland assumed the designated runner position at second for the Bees.  A Corey Boyette ground out to second moved the runner to third.  Knowing a fly ball to the outfield would end the game, Gems manager Brad Gyorkos made the unusual, but probably wise, move of intentionally walking Burlington's top RBI guys Mason Schwalbach and Keanu Spenser.

That loaded the bases for Caleb Wulf, who in the end would have five of the Bees eight hits in the game.  That fifth hit was a line single over a drawn in Quincy infield to end it at 5-4.

Burlington closer Jake Jakubowski (2-0) took the win by tossing the ninth inning of the game on the 7th, then ten days later completing the effort by throwing the tenth frame, striking out two, while allowing one hit.

Wulf wound up with two runs batted in, as did Jaden Hackbarth.

Andrew Fay took the loss.

The walk off celebration was short lived for the Bees, as Quincy turned it right around with an 8-3 win in game two.

Rem Maxwell (1-4) took the loss.  The big righty went three and a third innings, giving up 9 hits and seven runs.  Noah Harbin (3-0) got the win.

Connor Laeng continued his hot streak, with a 2-4 night.  He also scored a run.

Burlington is home again Tuesday against another conference foe in Illinois Valley.  First pitch is at 6:30 PM.
