LumberKings Drop Close Matchup With Gems

CLINTON, IOWA - The LumberKings returned home on Monday night to face the Quincy Gems for the third time this season.

Following a forty-five minute rain delay, the LumberKings took the field and were fast out of the gate. Joe Simpson (Kirkwood CC) led off the game with a double, and later was driven in by Jeremy Conforti (College of DuPage) on a groundout to first base giving Clinton a 1-0 lead in the first.

Fast forwarding to the fifth. Rayth Petersen (University of Illinois Chicago) would get his sixth RBI of the season plating Tyler Dahm (Mount Mercy) on a ground ball that saw Petersen safe following an error by Gems' first baseman Zack Stewart (Missouri State University).

With Clinton up 2-0, the Gems would respond. Quincy plated three runs in the sixth inning off of Kyle Orman (Mount Mercy University) and would not look back, taking the ball game 3-2.

On the mound for the LumberKings, Jared Simpson (University of Iowa) made his first start of the year. The second year LumberKing was fantastic. He pitched 2.1 Innings, struck out four and only allowed one hit.

In the later innings, Jack Young (Parkland College) was superb. The righty went three innings and struck out six Gems, including a stretch of four in a row.

Clinton will take on the Gems once again tomorrow night, with Brody Brecht (University of Iowa) taking the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at NelsonCorp Field.
