Kings Fall to West Virginia at Home 9-8

SPRINGFIELD, Ohio – Despite a total of seventeen runs and eighteen hits, the Kings were held scoreless after their five-run fifth and fell to the visiting West Virginia Miners 9-8.

The Kings offense started up in their share of the third inning trailing 1-0, as Alex Ryan (Lake Mills, WI; Valparaiso) led off with a base hit. Gus Gregory (Strongsville, OH; Strongsville High School) followed with a base hit. Ryan came home as Patrick Fultz (Springfield, OH; Clark Shawnee) reached on a fielding error while scooping up an RBI. Gregory scored on a double play ball.

With Trey Carter (Wheelersburg, OH; Rio Grande) started the fourth inning reaching on an error, eventually coming home on a RBI groundout by Evan Waggoner (Bedford, IN; Evansville.) The last of the damage happened in the fifth, after chasing West Virginia's starter out of the game. Nick Dolan (Pittsburgh, PA; Ohio Univ.) greeted the first Miner bullpen arm with a single to load the bases up. Three bases-loaded walks to Trey Carter, Ethan Krizen (North Port, FL; Tallahassee CC), and Waggoner tied the game up at 6-6, with the go-ahead run scoring on another Alex Ryan base hit. A Fielder's Choice by Gus Gregory scored the last run of the game, as Champion City led 8-6.

West Virginia scored their last runs of the game in the sixth off of Aaron Miller (Canton, OH; Notre Dame College.) The last two Kings pitchers in Tyler Wynkoop (Huber Heights, OH; Toledo) and Jake Woolf (Beavercreek, OH; California Univ. of Pennsylvania) kept the Miners offense quiet, but Champion City was unable to tie the game and falling to the Miners 9-8.

Cade Kontny (Lakeland, FL – Spring Arbor University) got the start, as he threw for four innings and allowed a total of four runs on five hits and two walks, while striking out five. Alex Ryan, continuing his hot streak, went 3-for-3 and taking first on a hit-by-pitch.
