Walks Lead to Runs in 11-4 Burlington Loss to Quincy

Four Bees pitchers combined to strike out 12 batters, but issued 14 walks in an 11-4 loss to the Quincy Gems.  Seven of those free passes scored.  Jared Townsend started for Burlington and was immediately met with a leadoff double by Gems shortstop Andrew Fay.  He scored on a Matthew Batts home run to right.

Fay seemed to be in the middle of every Quincy rally, going 2 for 4 on the evening.  He walked twice, had an RBI and scored 3 runs.

Burlington briefly took the lead 4-3 in the bottom of the third.  Spencer Nivens flied out to center.  Kevin Santiago walked.  Ryan Grace, who is hitting .400 in his last six games, pulled a hard single through the right side advancing Santiago to third.  After AJ Henkle struck out, Joey Fitzgerald drove in Santiago, with Grace winding up at third.  Catcher Chase Honeycuttwalked to load the bases.  Trey Adams grounded to short with the runners going.  The throw pulled the first baseman off the bag.  The swipe tag missed Adams and two runs raced home.  Bees up 4-3.

The advantage was short-lived as Quincy pushed 6 runs across in the top of the fourth on 2 hits, 6 walks and a Bees error.

CJ Lewis shut the door on the Gems for the next four innings.  He allowed no hits, but issued 5 walks and a run.  He struck out four.  Steve Escarcega tossed a hitless eighth.

Lefty Weston Fulk gave up two runs in the ninth to reach the final score.

Burlington is on the road until June 21, when they take on Quincy once more.  The Clinton LumberKings roll in on Wednesday.
