Beutel Is Stellar In LumberKings' Second Straight Win

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - As the Prospect League season moves into July the Clinton LumberKings won their second consecutive game on Friday night. A 9-2 victory over the Springfield Lucky Horseshoes.

Prior to the ball game Springfield observed a period of silence in tribute to Lucas Otto, the Springfield pitcher who was killed in a vehicular crash late Wednesday night.

Clinton got off to a fast start in the first. Rayth Petersen (University of Illinois Chicago) opened up the scoring with an RBI single, and Matt Scherrman (UW-Oshkosh) followed that up with his third home run of the season, a two-run shot to make it 3-0.

On the mound for the LumberKings Jared Simpson (Iowa) took the ball. To start the bottom of the first, facing Payton Pennington (Kent State), the lefty threw three consecutive balls, making it a 3-0 count in honor of Lucas Otto's number 30.

Springfield would end up tallying one in the inning. After walking, Pennington scored on an error making it 3-1. The run was the first run scored against Jared Simpson in 2022.

Springfield would tally one more in the third. Jacob Compton (Memphis) drove in a run with a single pulling the Lucky Horseshoes to within one.

The Lumberkings would add insurance. Clinton tacked on six more runs throughout the game including RBI knocks from Trevor Burkhart (LSU-Shreveport), Adam Weed (University of Illinois Chicago) and Rayth Petersen.

In relief for Clinton Ben Beutel (Iowa) was once again sensational. The lefty pitched five scoreless innings, striking out nine batters and allowing just three hits in the effort.

The LumberKings were victorious, 9-2.

Clinton now moves to 2-1 on the road trip and looks forward to continuing it tomorrow night, where they will start a series with the Burlington Bees.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
