The Wanatah, Ind. native pitched for the DuBois County Bombers in the Prospect League in 2011, starting nine games and collecting a 2.88 ERA with a 2-3 record. Manea struck out 59 batters and allowed just 40 hits and 27 walks over 53 innings in 2011, including an eight-inning one-hit performance, where he struck out seven against the Nashville Outlaws. He was awarded the Prospect League Pro Prospect of the Year following his 2011 campaign.

Manaea spent three years at Indiana State University from 2011 to 2013. He was a two-time All-Missouri Valley Conference Second Team and an American Baseball Coaches Association All-Region selection in 2013. He is third all-time in ISU career strikeouts (290) and led the Sycamores in strikeouts in 2011, 2012, and 2013. Manea is also sixth in career ERA (3.13) and games started (45), and eighth in innings pitched (262.2). He was elected into the Indiana State University Athletics Hall of Fame in 2021.

Manea was drafted 34th overall by the Kansas City Royals in the 2013 Major League Baseball Amateur Player Draft. He made his MLB debut on April 29, 2016 with the Oakland Athletics. On April 21, 2018, Manaea threw a no-hitter against the Boston Red Sox at the Oakland Coliseum, striking out 10 batters and walking 2. At the time the Red Sox had a .894 winning percentage, which was the best record of any team to be no-hit in baseball history.

A member of the Oakland Athletics, San Diego Padres, and San Francisco Giants across his major league career, Manea has a career 4.11 ERA with 917 strikeouts and a 65-56 record across 195 games.

"Being selected is an honor," said Manaea. "The Prospect League helped get me where I am today. The people that I met were amazing and the experiences I had got me ready for professional baseball. I loved my time with the Bombers and wouldn't trade that for anything."
